On average a number of approximately 150 children are living in PEACE VILLAGE INTERNATIONAL at any given time. These children need professional care 24 hours a day, 7 days the week around the clock. Interns, who aim to assist and support our professional staff in the children’s home, must therefore necessarily be prepared to work in shifts (morning shift from 6:30-14:30h and evening shift from 14:00-22:00).
The children’s home of PEACE VILLAGE INTERNATIONAL cannot be compared to regular German children’s homes since in PEACE VILLAGE the main focus is clearly on the medical treatment of the children. The children will stay in Germany only for a limited period of time. As soon as their medical treatment is completed successfully, they will return to their families in their home countries. Therefore we do not aim to fully integrate the children into the German society and try to maintain a professional distance at any times. During intensive introductory trainings, interns will be assisted in keeping the balance between sensitively caring for the children while at the same time maintaining a professional distance.
After the children have been treated in hospitals, they will come to PEACE VILLAGE in Oberhausen for postoperative treatment and rehabilitation. Interns will assist and support our professional staff in physiotherapy or in the treatment room f.i. by changing bandages. Additionally, interns will care for the children in the waiting room. They play with them, entertain them and comfort them. At the same time, interns also help in maintaining order.
The regular working hours in the rehabilitation center are from 8:30h to 17:00h.
Kitchen/House keeping services
Approximately 150 children are living at the PEACE VILLAGE in Oberhausen at any given time. Obviously, each and every one of them needs to get a meal three times a day. The highest maxim of the kitchen is that the food that is served is healthy and supports the healing process of the children. To ensure this, we are cooking the food ourselves. As anyone can imagine, cooking for such a great number of children is a real organizational challenge! As we usually have children from about ten different nations, it is obvious that tastes and preferences differ widely. Apart from this, it is simply the sheer quantity of meals that need to be prepared! However challenging this might be at times, every time we watch the children hungrily eating, enjoying the food and recovering from their illnesses, we realize again and again: it’s worth it!
Interns will assist in preparing the food, washing the dishes, preparing the tables etc. Moreover, they will also get the opportunity to support our staff with all the logistical tasks such as organizing constant supply with foodstuffs. In short, interns will engage in everything that goes with the regular day-to-day business of such an exceptional workplace. The regular working hours (shift work) are from 7:00-15:30h and from 11:30-20:00h.
Apart from the medical care, PEACE VILLAGE has established a school-house for recreational-pedagogic and creative activities. The so-called school-house is not a school in the strict sense and therefore does not follow a classic curriculum and schedule. Instead it seeks to equip the children with knowledge and competencies they directly need in their home countries. Therefore, lessons in hygiene or handicraft activities (aimed at promoting fine motor skills) are considered equally important as lessons in writing, reading and math. Other activities of the school-house are f.i. making music, doing arts and preparing typical local food from the childrens’ home countries. Interns will assist in all these activities and everything that goes with it, as f.i. preparing the rooms, organize handicraft materials etc.
Since there is overall less workload than in other departments, it is possible to work for a number of hours a week in other departments (f.i. kitchen, child care, or laundry) alongside the school house. The regular working hours are therefore the same as in most departments, namely from 8:30-17:00h.
The public relations department is located in the PEACE VILLAGE’s central department in Dinslaken. Interns will gain experiences in media-related work (print media and internet) as well as in fundraising and donor care. Another field of the public relations work is the organization of events, f.i. the every year "Peace im Pott" live-music-event, sponsored runs, or the village festival. Appointments or events directly in the "village" will provide for variety and offers the opportunity to get in contact with the children as well.
In short, interns will assist in everything that goes along with representing PEACE VILLAGE INTERNATIONAL and proving information to the public.
The core working hours in the public relations department are from 9:00-17:00h. However, since there are often events and appointments in the evening or at the weekends, working hours vary from time to time.
The educational establishment of PEACE VILLAGE INTERNATIONAL focuses on peace education activities for school classes and other groups as well as adult education. The educational establishment furthermore offers a wide range of workshops such as computer courses, photography courses, parent-child activities any many more.
Interns will assist in administrative tasks as well as in preparing the premises for the groups of visitors. Interns will also provide information and take care of visitor groups who stay in PEACE VILLAGE for a number of days to exchange with our children and to experience the every-day routine.
The core working hours in the educational establishment are from 9:00-17:00h. However, since our program includes evening-activities or weekend-workshops, working hours can vary from time to time.
